About this course

Course Overview:

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing is a job-ready qualification based on National Occupational Standards (NOS). This qualification will provide you with the
requisite knowledge, understanding and skills to work competently as a hairdresser. Throughout this qualification, you will ensure responsibility to reduce risks to health
and safety, give customers a positive impression, advise and consult with clients, shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp, change hair colour, cut hair using basic techniques, style and finish hair and set and dress hair. You will be supervised by technical staff and assessed on your occupational competence

Duration:

One day a week for 24 weeks (payment plan available – 3/4 months interest free or 12 months with little interest)

Pre-requisites:

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. Although a good
understanding of English reading and writing is required

Kits:

A level 2 hairdressing kit will need to be purchased (approx £140)

Student Progression

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Hairdresser (SRGH) with The Hair Council. As a junior hairdresser/stylist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
– commercial hairdressing salon
– independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
– product manufacturing and training television, film, theatre and media
– armed services
– HM prison service
– cruise liners
– hospitals/care homes

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing an advanced apprenticeship or Level 3 qualification in hairdressing, these include:

What will I learn on this course?

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior
hairdresser/stylist. Learners must achieve all mandatory units, which include:

Mandatory units covered:

  • UG31G20 A/601/5867 Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • UG21G17 L/601/0933 Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your
    organisation
  • UN211G7 D/600/1265 Advise and consult with clients
  • UN20GH8 L/600/1214 Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • UN20GH9 D/600/1038 Change hair colour
  • UN2GH12 H/600/1039 Cut hair using basic techniques
  • UN2GH10 F/600/1002 Style and finish hair 6 50
  • UN2GH11 Y/600/1216 Set and dress hair

Optional units covered :

  • UG211G4 Y/600/1264 Fulfil salon reception duties
  • L/600/1004 Plait and twist hair

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will
also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to advise and consult with clients and then provide a complete hairdressing service which includes shampooing
and conditioning, colouring, cutting and setting, dressing, and styling and finishing hair. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem-solving and research skills will
also be developed. In addition to completing mandatory units, learners are required to achieve nine credits from optional units which include (this list is not exhaustive): remove hair extensions, relax hair, perm and neutralise hair, plait and twist hair, and temporarily attach hair to enhance a style.
